Story of Jeong Jang Deok

Mr. Jeong’s family at the reunion venue in 2002

On the 17th of April in 1968, all of the seven sailors on the ship Changyeong, which was operating in the East Sea on the day, were abducted by North Korea. 34 years later in September 2002, Jangbaek Jeong, one of the sailors, shed tears while holding his mother at Mt. Geumgang, where the 5th separated family reunion was held.

Mr. Jeong’s brother’s familyThe mother spent the 34 hours shedding tears every night thinking she had made him work on the ship due to financial hardship. After meeting her son again, she felt slightly less burdened.

The mother prepared a gift for her son, but he did not take it because he still remembered how poor they were 34 years ago and believed his family in South Korea would still be that poor.

His younger brother Jangdeok Jeong is desperately waiting to meet Jangbaek. Jangdeok has one thing he feels he should tell his brother. It is that the family in South Korea is doing well and he hopes Jangbaek could be well without worrying about them until the day comes.
